UAE Student Visa Requirements 2026: How to Apply, Eligibility & Documents
These are the UAE student visa requirements 2026 for international students: who can sponsor you, which documents you need, how to apply, what the government fee is in Dubai, and what happens when your studies end.
Short answer: A UAE student visa is a residence permit that lets you live in the country while you study. Your sponsor is either an accredited UAE university or college, or a parent who is a UAE resident. Admission and a visa are two separate things. The residence application has its own documents, a medical test for applicants aged 18 and over, a security check and an Emirates ID application.
What is a UAE student visa?
Officially, the UAE student visa is a student residency visa. It is linked to your study program and sponsor, and it is a resident permit rather than a visitation visa. ICP is in charge of federal resident services. Certain requirements vary by emirate in Dubai because applications are processed by GDRFA Dubai.
UAE student visa eligibility: quick summary
- You are accepted by, or enrolled at, a UAE institution that is accredited for foreign students.
- You have a sponsor: the institution, or a parent who holds a valid UAE residence.
- Along with the other documents listed below, you might present a certificate from the institution indicating the duration of your study.
- You pass the security check and the medical fitness test if you are at least eighteen.
- You have valid health insurance.
Who can sponsor a student?
University sponsorship: You can be sponsored by an approved institution or university, and universities help with the visa application procedure (u.ae). According to GDRFA, the institution serves as both the student’s host and a guarantor in Dubai. Ask your university’s student affairs or visa office before proceeding, as many of them handle the application.
Parent sponsorship: Expatriate parents with a UAE residence can sponsor their sons up to the age of 25. If older boys can show that they attend a higher education institution, they can continue to be sponsored by their parents. Daughters can be sponsored for study, regardless of age, until they marry. The two official pages word the age limit slightly differently (“up to 25” on u.ae, “under 25” on ICP’s family sponsorship card), so if you are close to 25, confirm the exact cut-off with ICP or your sponsor’s typing centre before applying. For general family sponsorship rules, see our UAE residence visa guide.
UAE student visa documents
The documents depend on who sponsors you and where you apply.
Institution-sponsored students (ICP student category)
| Document | Notes |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months |
| Personal photo | See UAE visa photo requirements |
| Approval certificate | From the Ministry of Education or the emirate’s appropriate education authority |
| Enrolment certificate | From the university, college or institution |
| Acceptance letter | States the academic programme and its duration |
| Valid health insurance |
Parent-sponsored students
A student sponsored by a parent applies as a dependant, so the general residence-visa document list applies. It includes:
- A copy of the student’s passport and a current colored personal photo on a white background
- The Emirates ID application receipt
- A certified housing lease contract or proof of owning a residence
- A copy of the sponsor’s passport with a valid residence permit, and the sponsor’s job contract
- A medical fitness certificate for dependants above 18
- The entry permit
- An attested birth certificate (for children)
- Medical insurance or a health card
- A certificate from the university or institute stating the duration of study

How to apply for a student visa to the UAE

- Secure admission at an accredited institution.
- Inquire with your institution about the appropriate sponsorship route: university or parent.
- Get the paperwork ready for your route.
- Entry permit. If you are outside the UAE, the general document list includes an entry permit. Your institution or sponsor will tell you how it is arranged.
- The sponsor submits the application. ICP Smart Services (website or app, with UAE Pass login) is used for this on a federal level. In Dubai, GDRFA Dubai accepts applications through its smart channels, Customer Happiness Centres and Amer centres. u.ae also lists the Visit Dubai student visa page for Dubai applicants.
- If you are at least eighteen, finish the medical exam and obtain an Emirates ID.
- Finish residence within 60 days of entry. According to ICP, overstay fines of AED 50 per day apply if you enter the UAE and the residency permit is not finalized within 60 days.
- Track your application. See how to check your UAE visa application status.
Dubai student visa vs other emirates
GDRFA Dubai is in charge of Dubai student visas, whilst the federal ICP service card handles more general residence permits. There are differences between the two official pages that we looked at:
| ICP student category (federal) | GDRFA Dubai student service | |
| Sponsor | Accredited institution | Institution acts as host and guarantor |
| Documents | Passport, photo, enrollment certificate, acceptance letter, approval certificate, and health insurance | White-backed photo, a copy of the passport, an authorized medical checkup, an Emirates ID receipt, and health insurance |
| Official completion time | The duration of the residence permit service is two days. | 48 hours |
| Staying after studies or expiry | 180 days after the study period ends | 60-day grace period following the cancellation or expiration of the permit |
This implies that the two figures begin with distinct events. ICP counts 180 days from the end of the study period, while GDRFA Dubai counts a 60-day grace period from the day the residence permit expires or is cancelled. We were unable to locate an official page explaining how they might overlap in practice. If you study in Dubai, plan around the shorter GDRFA figure and confirm your own date with your university or GDRFA. Ask your organization which authorities and regulations apply to your emirate if you’re not in Dubai.
UAE student visa fees
GDRFA Dubai lists these government fees for the student residence permit (GDRFA Dubai):
- Residence permit fee: AED 200
- Knowledge Dirham: AED 10, and Innovation Dirham: AED 10
- Fee inside the country: AED 500
- Delivery: AED 20
- According to GDRFA, if the residency lasts more than two years, the issuing charge rises by AED 100 annually.
These are government fees only. The total a university quote can differ because of medical tests, insurance, Emirates ID and service charges, so ask for an itemised quote before you pay. For students outside Dubai, the federal ICP student category lists the fee lines below.
- Application fee: AED 100
- Residence permit issuance fee, per year: AED 100
- Smart Services fee: AED 100
- Financial security deposit fee: AED 20
- Status adjustment: AED 500
The same ICP fee list also shows a domestic-worker guarantee of AED 5,000, which does not apply to students. Ask your institution which lines you will pay because the card does not specify when the AED 500 status adjustment or the AED 20 deposit will be charged. Fees can change, so check the live ICP page before budgeting.
UAE student visa processing time
GDRFA Dubai lists 48 hours as the expected completion time for the student residence permit, and ICP lists 2 days for its residence permit service in general. Only the government step is covered during these times. They do not include admission, document preparation, the medical test or the entry permit, so start early and ask your institution for its own timeline.
UAE student visa validity and renewal
- Institution-sponsored: According to ICP, the study program dictates the length of stay.
- Sponsored residence in general: u.ae says sponsored residence visas can be issued for 1, 2 or 3 years, and a dependant’s visa cannot go beyond the sponsor’s expiry date. If you are sponsored by a parent, this is important.
- Dubai: Visit Dubai describes the regular student visa as valid for one year and renewable annually for the length of the course. What applies to you is the expiration date shown on your visa and the guidelines provided by your school.
- Renewal: the sponsor must renew before the visa expires. On the GDRFA Dubai and ICP portals, renewal is a different service. In Dubai, GDRFA says a student can renew on the same terms as the original issue. The prerequisites include a white-background photo, a copy of the passport, and an authorised medical examination; the prices are the same, and the completion time is 48 hours. Your Emirates ID (u.ae) expires together with the visa.
Spending more than 180 days away from the UAE
Generally speaking, if a person remains outside of the United Arab Emirates for more than 180 days in a succession, their residency visa is automatically revoked. The exception for students applies to students enrolled in educational institutions abroad (the u.ae page says this follows Dubai rules and advises checking with ICP for other emirates), so for a student who only travels extensively while studying in the United Arab Emirates, it is not safe.
You must apply for an entry permission from outside the nation if your visa expires in this manner, and you will be fined AED 100 for each 30 days or less spent overseas. Residents of Dubai are not eligible for the service. This rule does not apply to holders of Golden Visas. Ask your university before planning a long trip.
UAE student visa after graduation
ICP says students may remain in the UAE for 180 days after the study period ends. GDRFA Dubai states a 60-day grace period after the residence permit expires or is cancelled. Do not plan around the longer figure in Dubai without confirming it. Staying beyond the permitted period brings a fine of AED 50 per day (UAE overstay fines).
Cancelling a student visa
Normally only the sponsor can cancel a residence visa. The dependents’ visas must be revoked prior to the sponsor’s if a parent sponsors both of you. For a student leaving the country for good, the cancellation should be done before departure, so check this with your sponsor or university.
Golden Visa for students
The majority of pupils won’t be eligible for this alternative path. With certificates of distinction and letters of reference from the school or university, exceptional high school students may be granted a five-year Golden Visa, while top university students may be granted a ten-year one, according to u.ae. See also our guide to Golden Visa eligibility for outstanding students.
Family of university students
u.ae says family members of foreign students at UAE universities may stay in the UAE as long as they can afford suitable housing. Before depending on this, check with your university or ICP as the page does not explain the sponsorship mechanics.
Frequently asked questions
What are the UAE student visa requirements for 2026?
An accredited school, a sponsor (the school or a parent who lives in the UAE), a certificate outlining the length of the study, current health insurance, and, if you are 18 years of age or older, a security check and medical fitness test are all requirements.
Which documents are required for a UAE student visa?
ICP lists a passport, photo, enrollment certificate, acceptance letter, approval certificate, and health insurance for students sponsored by the university. Parent-sponsored students use the dependant document list, which adds the sponsor’s documents and housing proof.
Does admission guarantee a UAE student visa?
No. The visa application has its own checks and is a distinct residency application.
Can my parents sponsor my student visa?
Yes, if they are UAE residents. Sons can be sponsored up to the age of 25 (with a later extension if they show higher-education attendance), and daughters until they marry.
What is the duration of a student residency visa in the UAE?
According to ICP, the duration corresponds with the study plan. A dependent’s visa cannot outlast the sponsor’s, and sponsored residence visas are typically granted for one, two, or three years. According to Visit Dubai, the standard student visa in Dubai is renewed every year for a period of one year. Verify your visa’s expiration date.
What is the price of a student visa to the UAE?
ICP has its own pricing lines for the student category in Dubai, but GDRFA publishes a residency permit fee of AED 200 in addition to the other charges in the fees section. Request an itemized quote because the total from your university can be more.
How much time does it take to process a student visa for the UAE?
For the government phase, ICP specifies two days while GDRFA Dubai lists 48 hours. Give admissions, medical examinations, and paperwork more time.
Can I renew my UAE student visa?
Indeed. Before it expires, the sponsor renews it via GDRFA Dubai or ICP.
Are the rules different in Dubai?
The official grace time upon expiration (60 days on GDRFA Dubai against 180 days after studies on ICP) and the document list are two examples of the differences.
Are Pakistani and Indian students subject to different rules?
We found no official nationality-specific student visa rule in the sources reviewed. Entry-permit rules by nationality are a separate matter, so check with your institution.
Can my family join me?
u.ae says family members of foreign university students may stay if they can afford suitable housing.
NOTE: GDRFA Dubai and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP). Verify your case with your university or the issuing body because rules, fees, and procedures are subject to change and each school has its own procedures.
